Poikilocytes are abnormally shaped blood cells seen on blood films. There are many types of poikilocytes; amongst the more common types are the schistocytes, acanthocytes, and stomatocytes. While the presence of some poikilocytes is not clinically significant (artefactual or normal for specific breeds), others may be reflective of a wide spectrum of metabolic changes and various pathological conditions. Recognising the different poikilocytes, identifying the clinically significant ones and correctly interpreting the clinical implications of their presence are valuable diagnostic skills that can increase immensely the value of blood smear reviews. In this Archived Webinar, we will learn to identify different types of poikilocytes and review the pathogenesis of their formation in various clinical conditions.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) are retroviral infections of global significance to pet cats. Several recent advances that impact on FIV and FeLV testing are relevant for the small animal practitioner. These include vaccination for FIV, an improved understanding of the pathogenesis of FeLV and an expanding range of testing options. Deciding which cats to test, which test to use and interpreting the results for our patients relies on an understanding of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of these infections as well as the performance, limitations and availability of different tests. Using case examples, a current guide to FIV and FeLV testing will be presented.
